Due to his strategic location, the Kriegsmarine began to use Brest harbour facilities early in august 1940. The port was quickly restored to full working order became the home port of the 1st and 9th u-boat flottillas in 1941.

Although Active bombed by the RAF and the USAF, the base will undergo some major damage. Only Talboy bombs succeeded in breaking through the roof over 7m of concrete.
